Commencement of the Project indicate the realization of a national dream to continue the Phase II of the Accra-Tema Motorway, which was constructed some 43 years ago. Upgrading the vital 14km road link, has been on the drawing board since the Accra-Tema Motorway was completed in the 1960s. Tackling it under the Transportation Project of the $547m Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Program, funded by the Government of the United State of America will alleviate the unacceptable traffic congestion levels currently experienced on the road corridor. President John Agyekum Kufour indicated that, movement on the Tetteh- Quashie -Mallam road is tedious and reconstructing it into a first-class, three lane dual carriage way will reduce travel time and vehicle operating cost. According to him, it will improve the turnaround time from farm gate to the airport and Tema seaport, as well as make an immense impact on the economy of the nation. |

He noted that the project is the first completely urban-based Road Project being undertaken by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) under the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Programme. In appreciation of the support, government has decided to name the road from the Tetteh-Quarshie Interchange through the Apenkwa Interchange to Mallam Junction “George-Walker Bush Motorway”. The Chairman of MiDA Board, Mr. Edward Boateng pointed out that the existing Tetteh-Quarshie-Mallam road is a major road for farmers in the Greater-Accra, Western and Central Region but is severely congested during the greater part of the working day. "This congestion results in high vehicle operating costs and delayed transportation of horticulture product. This severely impacts on business profits and deters investments in the Agriculture Sector". |
