MiDA COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY WITH MARKET WOMEN
Officials of the Millennium Development Authority, MiDA, have commemorated this year’s International Women’s Day with a visit to two markets in Accra.
The objective of the visits to the Maamobi and Nima Markets was to sensitize the market women on the incidence of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) how they can contribute towards curbing the phenomenon.
The MiDA team led by Dr Cherub Antwi-Nsiah, Director of Social and Gender Integration (SGI), encouraged the women to be concerned about TIP and offer their support to arresting the situation by reporting persons they suspect to be engaging in the act to the police and other local government institutions set up to fight against such crime. Dr Antwi-Nsiah told the women that nearly 80% of human trafficking victims are women, and that there are indications that women are involved in perpetrating the crime.
Highlighting the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration- “Be Bold for Change”, Dr Antwi-Nsiah encouraged the women in the markets to be bold in seeking an end to human trafficking. She cited a recent local newspaper report in which 24 children were rescued from trafficking in the Volta Region and she encouraged the women to support the National campaign against human trafficking.
Dr Antwi-Nsiah also mentioned that Ghana risks losing donor support from several donor agencies who fund the country’s various development projects. Ghana is currently placed in the Tier 2 watch list according to the 2016 Trafficking in Persons Report published by the US Department of State. A slip to Tier 3 will result in the suspension of funding, particularly, to development projects and programmes supported by the United States Government.
The MiDA SGI Directorate in the Compact Programme is responsible for ensuring a gender responsive and socially inclusive electricity delivery. The Directorate’s key areas of work are:
Promoting consultation and engagement with women, vulnerable groups Civil Society Organisations (CSO), Community Based Organisations (CBO), government institutions and the private sector.
Ensuring gender responsive and socially inclusive project implementation
Promoting the institutional development of gender in energy organizations, improving gender and social inclusion practices, as well as advocating for change in gender relations in the energy sector.
Enhancing the quality of gender relations at MiDA.
