Honourable Cynthia Mamle Morrison, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) and Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, has expressed a keen interest in the Millennium Development Authority’s (MiDA) efforts at increasing gender access to energy in Ghana in the implementation of the Power Compact Programme. The Minister has therefore charged MiDA’s Gender and Social Inclusion (GSI) Unit to amplify the Power Compact’s Gender related activities in order to gain more public awareness.

Hon. Morrison said these at a Meeting with Officials of MiDA, who were at her Office to congratulate her on her appointment and also present to her the GSI’s activities. Present at the Meeting was Dr. Afisah Zakariah, Chief Director at the MoGCSP. The Officials from MiDA were Dr. Cherub Antwi-Nsiah- Director of the GSI Unit, Pamela Djamson-Tettey- Director Communication and Outreach, Ellen Dzah and Martha Ofori both Gender and Social Inclusion Officers.

The Minister lauded the Power Compact’s Internship and Mentoring Programme for female students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Courses in the Tertiary, Technical and Vocational Institutions. She urged MiDA to consider adding to the Programme Outreach activities to Basic Schools, and encourage young girls to pursue STEM Courses.

Dr. Antwi-Nsiah thanked the Minister for her pledge to continue supporting MiDA’s efforts at mainstreaming Gender in the implementation of the Compact Programme. She also praised the Ministry for collaborating with and supporting the implementation of the Compact’s Social and Gender Inclusion Plan (SGIP). The SGIP serves as an Operational and Monitoring tool to ensure that Gender and Social Inclusion principles are integrated into the detail design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Compact Projects. It is used by MiDA, Implementing Entities (IEs) on the Compact Programme, including MoGCSP, and other Program Stakeholders.

The Ghana Power Compact Programme, funded with a grant of US498.2 million, provided by the United States Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), is being implemented by MiDA on behalf of the Government of Ghana. The five year Programme, which became effective in September 6, 2016, is funding investments in Ghana’s Power distribution sector aimed at addressing constraints to the supply of adequate and reliable power. The Compact Projects have been designed to address the attendant socio-economic and gender issues that are related to electric power supply in Ghana.
