GHANAIANS BENEFITING FROM COMPACT PROGRAMMES – MiDA

Board Chairperson of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) Prof Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu says the nine-month extension of the Millennium Power Compact has been gainful, as “Ghanaians have already started enjoying the benefits from completed Compact projects.”

Prof Ntiamoa-Baidu said this in a speech read on her behalf by Dr Samuel Kobina DeSouza at the handing over ceremony for the utility Geographic Information System (GIS) at the ECG projects office at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on Wednesday.

The GIS is a foundational investment for ECG’s work as a distribution utility to better plan for and manage assets as well as support data-driven decision-making for network improvements and operations.

Prof Ntiamoah- Baidu recounted how through the Pokuase Bulk Supply Point (BSP) substation, over 350 thousand residents of Pokuase, Nsawam, Achimota, Kwabenya, Haatso, Agbogba, Adenta, Anyaa Sowutuom and surrounding areas had seen significant improvements in the quality of electricity supplied to those areas.

Similarly, about 600 thousand residents of 53 communities and towns in six Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) operational districts; namely Legon, Kwabenya, Kaneshie, Dansoman, Achimota and Akuapem-Mampong were also experiencing benefits from the injection of new transformers, the upgrade of existing ones, and the rehabilitation of the electric distribution networks in these areas.

The residents, she noted “are noticing brighter lights and a considerable reduction in the frequency of outages than previously.  The electricity supplied to their homes and offices is stable, and so their electronic appliances are safeguarded. In addition, businesses in these areas, whether small, medium or large, are reporting enhanced operations, which are likely to result in higher productivity and increased profits.”

Safety and security enhanced

Consumers, she indicated could attest to the improvements in road safety and security with the Compact Programme’s investments in street lighting across 20 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

The installation of high energy-efficient and durable street lights on over 500km stretch of streets and roads is contributing to an enhanced quality of life in parts of Accra and the Eastern Region.

The MiDA Board Chairperson noted that the Compact Programme had envisaged that investments that support ECG’s operations and financial turnaround would contribute to strengthening the utility and consequently have a bearing on the other operators in the power supply value chain.  It was  for that reason that over 80 percent of the funding for the Compact was allocated to activities that helped reduce technical and commercial losses, improve revenue collection, reduce outages and transform ECG into a modern utility operator.

Steven Marma, Resident Country Director - MCC

Resident Country Director for the MCC, Steven Marma said the inauguration of the vital new information technology system would support ECG’s efforts to modernize its operations.

She said “this investment, now complete, totals $8.5 million dollars and is a digital platform and mapping tool that has the potential to be the backbone of a modern utility business operation.”

“The system will provide real-time and reliable geospatial and location information for swift remote decision making, reducing costs and time spent visiting sites,” Mr Marma added.
