PRESIDENT AKUFO ADDO INAUGURATES GHANA’S LARGEST BULK SUPPLY POINT AT POKUASE
Pokuase, Oct. 20, 2021. The Millennium Development Authority, MiDA, has formally handed over the new 5V80MA Pokuase Bulk Supply Point Substation (BSP) to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRDICo) at an Inauguration Ceremony held on Wednesday October 20 in Pokuase.
The Pokuase BSP, constructed at a total cost of US$64.72 million is Ghana’s largest power substation and the fifth bulk supply point to be constructed in Accra. Funding for the project was provided by the United States Government through its Agency, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) as part of the Ghana Power Compact Program.
In his Address, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Guest of Honour at the Ceremony said that “insufficient and unreliable power supply have constrained and impeded many efforts to accelerate the pace of Ghana’s drive towards a new economy.” The President acknowledged the MCC’s contributions to Ghana’s development agenda through invesments worth over US$860 million across two Compact Programs. He stressed that the benefits realized from resources provided to the Energy Sector were visible in the reduction of erratic power supply and the availability of good quality power. “The incremental improvement in the quality of services delivered to the electricity consumer is noticeable and will further improve by the end of the Compact Program, some 8 months from now”, President Akufo-Addo said.
Professor Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu, Board Chair of MiDA, said “the Substation will improve and raise the operational and financial efficiencies of ECG and GRIDCo and increase the quality and reliability of electricity supplied to homes, Offices, small, medium and large business enterprises in parts of Greater Accra.”
Over 350,000 current customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) living in Pokuase, Nsawam, Achimota, Kwabenya, Haatso, Agbogba, Adenta, Anyaa Sowutuom and their environs are already noticing improvements in the quality of electricity supplied to these areas; a direct benefit from the BSP.
“The Pokuase Bulk Supply Point represents sustainable infrastructure investment by the United States with Ghana that will benefit hundreds of thousands of Ghanaians now and into the future,” remarked Ambassador Sullivan at the inaugural event. “It will help deliver more reliable power to the people, places, and businesses of Accra that drive increased economic activity benefitting families, businesses, and communities.”
President Akufo-Addo, together with Ambassador Sullivan, Nii Oto Kwame V, Pokuase Mantse and Naa Klorkai Densua IV, Queenmother of Pokuase, cut a ribbon and unveiled a Plaque to formally inaugurate the BSP.
